Modern Criticism and Theory: A Reader, by Nigel Wood, David Lodge

This third edition of Modern Criticism and Theory represents a major expansion on its previous incarnations with some twenty five new pieces or essays included. This expansion has two principal purposes. Firstly, in keeping with the collection’s aim to reflect contemporary preoccupations, the reader has expanded forward to include such newly emergent considerations as ecocriticism and post-theory.

Secondly, with the aim of presenting as broad an account of modern theory as possible, the reader expands backwards to to take in exemplary pieces by formative writers and thinkers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries such as Marx, Freud and Virginia Woolf.. This radical expansion of content is prefaced by a wide-ranging introduction, which provides a rationale for the collection and demonstrates how connections can be made between competing theories and critical schools.

The purpose of the collection remains that of introducing the reader to the guiding concepts of contemporary literary and cultural debate. It does so by presenting substantial extracts from seminal thinkers and surrounding them with the contextual materials necessary to a full understanding. Each selection has a headnote, which gives biographical details of the author and provides suggestions for further reading, and footnotes that help explain difficult references. The collection is ordered both historically and thematically and readers are encouraged to draw for themselves connections between essays and theories.

Modern Criticism and Theory has long been regarded as a necessary collection. Now revised for the twenty first century it goes further and provides students and the general reader with a wide-ranging survey of the complex landscape of modern theory and a critical assessment of the way we think – and live – in the world today.

Excellent Anthology of short essays and excerpts
By Hesper23
This "Reader" is a collection of some of the most influential and famous essays, or exerpts of larger works, by critics of the past 100 years. The works that are anthologized include: Ferdinand de Saussure's "Nature of the Linguistic Sign," Gerard Genette's "Structuralism and Literary Criticism," Roland Barthes's "The Death of the Author," Edward Said's "Crisis in Orientalism," and even Umberto Eco's "Casablanca: Cult Movies and Intertextual Collage." As far I can tell, the collection begins after New Criticism, although there are essays from the Russian Formalists. If you're interested in Structuralism/Semiology, Deconstructionism, Reader-response, Feminism, and Cultural Studies, then this anthology will work well for you.

This book is extremely useful to readers who are interested in literary criticism, and who do not necessarily want to do library searches to find the particular essay. The short biography of the author, as well as the "cross-reference" notes at the end of the biography, are helpful too. A similar anthology is *Literary Theory: An Anthology* edited by Julie Rivkin and Michael Ryan, which also collects the highlights of the theorists's work. However, I prefer Professor Lodge's book because 1) it more engaging, 2) it is smaller and more manageable.

Very useful for getting into theory, especially for undergraduates
By etal erehcse
This is by far one of the most useful textbooks I have used. I got it for a class a year ago and have used it as a supplement for nearly every class and paper since. The presentation makes the high-strung contemporary theory very accessible and the editors have done well to include a very broad scope of topics and positions, while maintaining a manageable size. It is very possible to read all of the essays, and each is very salient. I'm sure the 3rd edition (which has recently been released) only improves on all counts, most significantly in terms of including more and more contemporary critics. However, it is not necessary to shell out the extra $40 or so for a copy of that 3rd edition, or a brand new copy of of 2nd, when a used but immaculate 2nd edition will cost about $10 with shipping. The 2nd edition offers a very comprehensive--but not over-exhaustive--reading of trends in contemporary theory. I would recommend it for anyone interested in becoming familiar with critical theory, postmodernisms, contemporary literary theory etc; it is very, very worth it, especially if you want to be able to investigate literary philosophies and add an otherwise unavailable depth to your present studies.

Anatomy Lessons From the Great Masters, by Robert Beverly Hale, Terence Coyle

This classic book, whose foremost author was one of the great artistic anatomy teachers of the twentieth century, is an invaluable instructor and reference guide for any professional, amateur, or student artist who depicts the human form.

Revealing the drawing principles behind one hundred inspiring masterpieces, the book presents work by Leonardo, Michelangelo, Rubens, Raphael, Titian, Rembrandt, and other greats. These superb portrayers of figures knew that the secret of drawing them was seeing how underlying bone and muscle structures mold the body’s surface forms. Readers are shown how to learn from these great examples as the authors guide them through all the steps they would take in a life class or studio working with live models.

Amazon.com Review
Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters provides an anatomical counterpart to Robert Beverly Hale's classic reference book, Drawing Lessons from the Great Masters. Terence Coyle, who for several years assisted Hale at the Art Students League of New York, kept detailed notes of Hale's lectures and teaching methods. He combined these notes with 100 drawings to illustrate how the great masters portrayed specific parts of the human physique. As Hale points out, master artists such as Rembrandt, Leonardo, and Raphael "absorbed the technical details of anatomy so well that these details could be set down instinctively.... If an artist has to occupy his mind with the task of clumsily grouping the elemental facts of anatomy as he draws, there can be little room left for really important matters--such as the spirit of the drawing and the artist's expressive intent." Coyle provides several examples within the study of each anatomical area to illustrate the variety of styles and methods employed by the masters. The book treats, in order, the rib cage, the pelvis and thigh, the knee and lower leg, the foot, the shoulder girdle, the arm, the hand, and the neck and head. A complete series of anatomical reference plates by Dr. Paul Richer is included. By applying the timeless anatomical principles the great masters have handed down to us, any artist can begin to acquire the means by which to express the "really important matters." --Mary Ribesky

From Library Journal
It's rare to find good, comprehensive books on drawing the anatomy. Each of these the first, the return of a classic; the second, a focused study; and the third, lessons from the masters deserves a place on library shelves. Bridgman was a legendary teacher at New York's Art Students' League. There, he originated a system of drawing known as "constructive anatomy." In 1952, his seven books on anatomy were gathered into one volume, which became a standard work at art schools and universities. Published now for the first time in paperback, it holds up as an indispensable volume, with more than 200 illustrations of hands and hundreds of images of arms, shoulders, heads, torsos, legs, knees, and feet. Fairley's book concentrates on those troublesome extremities hands and feet. Sketchbook exercises are followed by eight detailed painting demonstrations in watercolor, oil, and other media. Fairley then continues on to portraits in which variations in age, skin tone, composition, mood, and movement are integrated. Advanced students will find Hale and Coyle's Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters a rich source of inspiration. Hale, like Bridgman, was one of the great teachers at the Art Students' League. His student, Coyle, gathered together Hale's famous lectures to produce this compendium. Hale drew on principles found in 100 masterpieces by such artists as Leonardo, Michelangelo, Rubens, Raphael, D?rer, Titian, and Rembrandt. In 1995, Giovanni Civardi's trilogy Drawing Human Anatomy (Sterling, 1995), Drawing the Female Nude (Sterling, 1995), and Drawing the Male Nude (LJ 3/15/96. o.p.) reached a high standard for good, basic books in this genre. These three surpass Civardi's works and are highly recommended for serious artists and comprehensive library collections.

Over-worked pseudo-intellectualized error-packed compendium
By A Customer
This book is best used for viewing its selection of Master Drawings many of which are superb. However, its written text is filled with a multitude of factual errors and pseudo-intellectualizations. It should be noted that this book was not written by Hale; it was written by one of his students and lacks the quality of Hale's classic, "Drawing Lessons from the Great Masters." Instead, this book loses itself in unimportant, erroneous anatomical minutia which will baffle, confuse, frustrate and ultimatly demoralize the motivated reader. It greatly misses the mark in both clarity and presentation of important anatomical theory.

Stop wasting time and buy it!

This is the best book you can find if you want to learn about how to sketch the human figure. Buy it and start copying the sketches inside. Over and over again! Imitating the old masters will teach you things you never dreamed of and will rub off on you when you do your own work. This book has excellent reproductions of 100 super drawings. Each drawing even has accompanying commentary. By the time you're done, you will understand like never before why the drawings work, and you will be able to look at other drawings and understand them better, as well. Excellent content
By Ben B
An excellent book on artistic anatomy. Reading this one book has taught me more than some figure drawing classes. A systematic deconstruction of how the masters of artistic anatomy have integrated their knowledge into some of the greatest drawings of all time. The book goes through the drawings of famous artists, categorized by the region of the body on which the drawings are focused, and attempts to explain how extensive knowledge of anatomy has been effectively applied. It touches on how these artists could create drawings which are more powerful than merely a photographic rendering of the model through their use of anatomy.
Unfortunately, the book is very cheaply bound. Entire leaves have detached themselves from the spine, though I have treated the book very well. My copy has turned into a stack of paper and scotch tape, wrapped loosely in its former cover. Despite that fact, I still consider it worth the purchase.
I have both this book and "Drawing Lessons from the Great Masters." Both are excellent books, but if you must only buy one, get this one. It is the better of the two.

Great even for advanced ELLs
By Perro Del Sol
I used this book and audio CD with some extremely advanced non-native speakers (Koreans who teach English as a foreign language in Korea) and they loved it. They found that they did not know 75% or more of the expressions in the book and they had a great time trying to incorporate the new language into their everyday conversations here in the U.S. Anyone who is a non-native speaker of English can benefit from this series.

Fantastic For Anyone With An Interest In History
By William J. Fallon
I thought this was great. The description of her childhood was enchanting. (Sleigh rides into town in winter because there were no cars yet.) Born in the 1890s many of the boys she knew died in WW I. Cover of Time in 1926. Husband Lord Of the Admiralty two terms before Churchill. Lots of very erudite letters. The description of preparations for WW II will blow you away. Planting vegetable gardens. Taking down all the street and road signs to confuse the invaders who never came. Taking the distributor cap out of your car so invaders couldn't use it. Living in France after the war. I loved it and it's hard to believe she is not a professional writer. The descriptions of ordinary things are mesmerizing.

A peek at a princess in a troubled time
By Frederick R. Andresen
Regarded as "the greatest beauty of her age," for Americans this book is a peek at English nobility in hard times, after England had lost so many of its promising young in World War I. It is a well-written account of that time between the wars from a celebrity under fire. My interest in Diana Cooper was her experience at Oxford at the time the Russian Prince Felix Yusupov was there, not too long before he returned to Russia and murdered Rasputin. Her accounts of the Prince's antics there, and her later meetings, along with husband Duff Cooper, with the Prince Felix and his wife and the famous Rembrandts is a chapter in my book, "The Lady with an Ostrich Feather Fan." An exciting read.

Great autobiography
By Edward Yarborough
"The Rainbow Comes and Goes," the first volume in the author's three-part account of her life, is definitely one of the best autobiographies I've ever read (and I've read Augustine's "Confessions" and the unabridged Casanova). Lady Diana has a remarkable talent for revealing herself as a distinct, unique personality; the daughter of a duke, she also gives a fine description of her aristocratic Edwardian girlhood. "Rainbow" is so good that I'm looking forward to reading the subsequent two volumes of her story.
