Shorter (history, Univ. of Toronto), whose most recent books include Bedside Manners ( LJ 3/1/86) and Women's Bodies (Transaction Pubs., 1990), here catalogs the aches and pains of countless legions from the 18th century to the present. His hypothesis is that "historical eras shape their own symptoms" of illness and that "these various paradigms greatly influenced the way patients presented psychosomatic illness to their doctors." It's a run-on litany of vapors, hysteria, weakness, exhaustion, fatigue, loss of ambition, low vitality, weak spells, neurasthenia, and sometimes just your "garden-variety somatizer such as would be found in any medical practice." The question of to what extent the times and culture influence the socially correct expression of physical and mental ills is not without interest to several scholarly fields, but this reader was plum tuckered out by the end.

Confused

I haven't actually read this book. I was about to buy it, but I'm confused by the reviews. If this guy is really lacking in compassion, I can't imagine it would be good for me.

I learned about this book from a John Sarno disciple, Howard Schubiner, whose book is called Unlearn Your Pain. He cites an enormous amount of research that indicates that physiological correlates (like the lesions mentioned by some reviewers) have not be proven to cause pain and/or fatigue (I have IC, which researchers used to believe was caused by Hunner's Ulcers--they were wrong). Schubiner indicates that people suffering from these syndromes who come to believe they have Mind Body Syndrome, and uncover the rage behind their symptoms, can improve "miraculously." But that doesn't mean they were malingering! The pain and symptoms are very real.

I am very interested in this history, so I wish i could feel confident that reading this book wouldn't just increase my stress. I was diagnosed with a conversion reaction when I was 10, but in such a way that it became a medical hex. The work on Mind Body Syndrome is undoing that hex--I no longer believe I'm in pain because I'm "hysterical." I now understand how the brain creates symptoms, and how we might be able--via increasing consciousness--to short circuit that process. The MBS method does not deny that the process was set off by trauma and it involves learning self-compassion.

I guess I'll pass on this book for now.

Outdated and wrong info on ME/CFS

Do not read if you need information on Myalgic Encephalomyelitis or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome because this book is not updated to include the latest medical research on the organic and biological abnormalities found in ME/CFS patients. Dr. Shorter is propagating the erroneous and harmful model that this disease is of pyschosomatic origins and thus he ignores the serious medical needs of this group which can result in permanent damage and disability. Scientists must be able to incorporate new data as it arises and not hold on dogmatically to their old theories. There was a time when Multiple Sclerosis was considered psychosomatic until it was realized it was caused by nerve sheath damage. Likewise, stomach ulcers were attributed solely to stress until a bacteria, h. pylori, was found to often be the cause. In light of the overwhelming biological research coming out of many facilities (e.g., Stanford, NIH, NOVA Southeastern, etc.), it's time to put an end to the myth that ME/CFS is a figment of the patient's imagination and begin treating it as the complex medical illness it is.

An important contribution to our field

As an analyst for a large manufacturing company's ERP implementation, I was responsible for a very complex and critical area called Classifications. Classifications was the place where all products, vendors, or customers were grouped into buckets based on similar behavior. For example, if this company manufactured vehicles, there could be classifications for hybrids, sports cars, SUVs, minivans, etc. To better understand classifications, I dived into screens, help files, and actual database tables and after several weeks, completed a classifications data model. The model I produced was very similar to the data model that appears on page 224 of "The Data Model Resource Book Volume 3: Universal Patterns for Data Modeling" by Len Silverston and Paul Agnew.

This book contains a collection of patterns, which are general building blocks that could be used as the basis for just about any type of data modeling within any industry. Classifications is one example, and there are a collection of others such as roles, statuses, and contact mechanisms. Whereas Volumes 1 and 2 in The Data Model Resource Book series contained models for common business processes or industries, this volume contains patterns that cross through all processes and industries. Consistent with the series however, the purpose of this text is to save the modeler time so instead of starting from scratch, the modeler can start from a reliable and proven foundation. Realizing these patterns exist and making them work for your particular modeling assignment can result in a higher quality data model and a greater level of consistency within your organization.

A majority of the book is dedicated to chapters which describe how to model a pattern at different levels of generalization. Level 1 is the most concrete and this is where terms and rules a business analyst are familiar with are shown, such as email address and telephone number. Level 2 through 4 go through increasingly more generized levels with Level 4 being the most generalized. The Classifications example I encountered in the ERP package for example was a Level 3 model, very generalized so that it can be leveraged by any industry. The book makes an important point that there are situations where one level is more appropriate than another, and sometimes the modeler must trade the familiarity and business rule enforcement of a Level 1 with the flexibility available in a Level 2, 3, or 4. For example, a phone number and email address from a Level 1 model would be generalized into contact mechanism data in a Level 2 model. This extra flexibility allows for accommodating other ways of contacting someone that may not have been specified (for example, via a person's "voice over IP" or Skype number). The book also makes the point that sometimes on a single model you can combine different levels for the same requirement (i.e. a hybrid approach).

Chapter 1 introduces the concept of a universal pattern as well as the terms and symbols used throughout the book. The goals for the book are also clearly articulated, in addition to the intended audience and a summary of each chapter. There is a wonderful furniture analogy used to distinguish a universal data model from a universal pattern. Universal data models (the subject of the first two volumes of The Data Model Resource Book), are similar to already constructed standard tables and chairs. The consumer can obtain this furniture instead of build the tables and chairs from scratch. Similarly, the modeler can reuse an inventory or claims universal data model instead of building it from scratch. Universal patterns are similar to the dovetail joints of the furniture, common pieces that exist in already built tables and chairs as well as custom furniture. Universal patterns are the building blocks such as the roles and statuses behind any modeling project.

Chapters 2 through 8 each focus on a particular pattern. Chapters 2 and 3 focus on parties and roles; Chapter 2 on declaration roles and Chapter 3 on contextual roles. A party is a person or organization of importance to the business, and declaration roles are those roles that are independent of any business event while contextual roles are dependent on a particular business event. For example Bob the person can have a declarative role of `Doctor', yet when an insurance claim is filed, they can also have the contextual role of `Primary Care Physician'. Chapter 4 focuses on similar structures for relating data including hierarchies, aggregations, and peer-to-peer relationships. Chapter 5 focuses on taxonomies and classifications, and Chapter 6 on patterns for states that business concepts go through. Chapter 7 contains patterns for getting in touch with parties, such as those patterns for modeling telephone number and email address. Chapter 8 focuses on how to model business rules including the rule itself, the factors involved in the rule, and the outcomes of the rule.

I was impressed with the consistency and comprehensiveness of each of these chapters. These chapters follow a similar format of demonstrating each of the four levels of detail. Each chapter begins with an explanation of the pattern and a discussion of its importance. Then for each of the four levels, there is a section on the reason for the level, how the pattern works (with lots of examples), when the pattern should be used, and the weaknesses of the pattern. I found the charts and tables to be extremely useful in the text, especially the Summary of Patterns table at the end of each chapter.

Chapter 9 focuses on how to apply these patterns in many types of efforts including both relational and dimensional modeling efforts and both application and enterprise areas of scope. As with the other chapters, there is a great summary at the end on the strengths and weaknesses of patterns with each type of effort. Chapter 10 adds the human dynamics side to incorporating patterns, as success or failure is heavily connected with people's perception or trust. Four principles are discussed, that will help acceptance and usage of the patterns: Understand motivations and work toward meeting them, Develop a clear, common, compelling vision, Develop trust, and Manage conflict effectively.

To summarize, under every data model is a set of common building blocks, clearly explained in "Universal Patterns for Data Modeling". I would recommend this book for every analyst, modeler, or architect who is striving for a level of information consistency within their organization. Whether you are just starting your modeling adventure or have been in the modeling for decades, you will find these patterns invaluable tools for every modeling effort.

The amount of work put into this book deserves more than a 5 star rating. The book covers a variety of data models and presents nearly a hundred diagrams. The author has been a consultant for database design for 20 years. This is a great work and his experience shows.

A Comprehensive Study of Key Data Model Patterns

Unlike the world of Object Oriented programming, there are very few pattern books devoted to data modeling. This is unfortunate because most business applications suffer from over-specialization & inflexibility in the data model, where change is very expensive. The few data model patterns books that do exist do not explore the depths of subject to the extent that this book does.

Based on their many years of experience, Silverston & Agnew chose to focus on the most common areas of interest (Parties, Roles, Relationships, Statuses, Classifications, Contact Mechanisms, & Rules) and offer a set of data model pattens for each. Each area has a set of "pattern levels" ranging from specific to general, listing benefits, drawbacks, & usage guidelines for each. The modeler can choose which pattern level best suites the enterprise based on perceived needs.

This book can be thought of as the "gang of four" book for data modeling. I would recommend this book for anyone engaging in any form of data modeling. You may not use the exact patterns, but it will at least serve as a catalyst for future thought.

I thought the book started a little bit slow but then it picked up. Love Lucky and Trista I thought the author did a great job with sharing their emotions and their inner turmoil. During the road trip you learn a lot about Tristas suffering in life, her past hurts and a glimpse of the person she wants to be. Lucky is one in a million, sweet caring and so damn cute. I enjoyed their conversations and banter and sharing with each other. The story was well written and easy to like. Would like to read the next one. 4 stars

Emotionally compelling and hot!

Full disclosure, I'm a rocker chick. I obsessively watched MTV in its glory days and sat making mix tapes all night. So when I saw this book with its access to a rock band, I was in. But it was Trista and Lucky who stole the show here. Trista is damaged, but trying so hard to be whole, and Lucky is just the guy to help her. He's a total Southern gentleman in a hot package.

I also loved the road trip component of the book. Driving long hours on the road and seeing the country makes for some good reading when the characters are stuck together for days at a time.

Enjoyed the road trip with Trista and Lucky, their story was fun and easy to read, full of suspense and surprises. Will definately read the sequel when it comes out to find out more about Trista's little sister. I recommend this book.

"Casual duplicity picks at the threads of our social fabric," Keyes warns, and not just because it creates a greater tendency toward suspicion and mistrust. The consequences of letting people get away with lying can be severe: when somebody gets a job based on a bogus résumé, for example, he or she deprives those applicants who didn't falsify their work credentials. Keyes deplores what he dubs an "alt.ethics" that has made lying more acceptable, and he points to a variety of contributing factors in society, from postmodernism's denial of a literal truth to the ease of making unverified statements online. This largely anecdotal broadside essentially replays David Callahan's The Cheating Culture, though with fresher stories that address recent incidents like the Martha Stewart trial and the controversies surrounding several authors and journalists who have blurred fiction and nonfiction or simply fabricated their stories. No one tells the truth

And that's the truth! It turns out kids lie by the age of four, and earnestly. I mean they are so convincing, you almost believe them faster and more than when former President Bush said " Mission Accomplished" and you and 100 Million other Americans thought he meant the War in Iraq ( he meant the Afghanistan Oil line ) any way, its a very good read about how no one tells the truth. So if you want that truth, read this book.

Required Reading For All Americans

This well-researched and cogently written expose should be required reading for all Americans. Mr. Keyes utilizes both anecdotal evidence, and to the extent it is available, statistics and other evidence, to demonstrate that "truth" is a rapidly vanishing value in our current society. He then explains that the ramifications of this value decline are significant; the ability to be able to "presume" honesty is at the core of our relationships, both personal, financial, and professional.

Indeed, dishonesty is our society is so prevelant that the truth-teller is currently at a distinct disadvantage. The witness is a judicial proceeding who tells the truth without embellishment will be discounted, as judges and juries presume that the witness, like all those before them, has exagerrated. Similarly, the job applicant who does not fudge will be rejected, as fudging is now presumed.

Despite its weighty subject, Mr. Keyes' writing style is engaging. Moreover, the validity of Mr. Keyes' points are reinforced by everyday life. I highly recommend this book.

Dr. Bharat Bhushan is an Ohio Eminent Scholar and The Howard D. Winbigler Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Graduate Research Faculty Advisor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and the Director of the Nanotribology Laboratory for Information Storage & MEMS/NEMS (NLIM) at the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. He is an internationally recognized expert of tribology and mechanics on the macro- to nanoscales, and is one of the most prolific authors. He is considered by some a pioneer of the tribology and mechanics of magnetic storage devices and a leading researcher in the fields of nanotribology and nanomechanics using scanning probe microscopy and applications to micro/nanotechnology.

He is the recipient of various international fellowships including the Alexander von Humboldt Research Prize for Senior Scientists, Max Planck Foundation Research Award for Outstanding Foreign Scientists, and the Fulbright Senior Scholar Award.

About the Author

Dr. Bharat Bhushan received an M.S. in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1971, an M.S. in mechanics and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1973 and 1976, respectively, an MBA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at Troy, NY in 1980, Doctor Technicae from the University of Trondheim at Trondheim, Norway in 1990, a Doctor of Technical Sciences from the Warsaw University of Technology at Warsaw, Poland in 1996, and Doctor Honouris Causa from the National Academy of Sciences at Gomel, Belarus in 2000. He is a registered professional engineer (mechanical). He is presently an Ohio Eminent Scholar and The Howard D. Winbigler Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Graduate Research Faculty Advisor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and the Director of the Nanotribology Laboratory for Information Storage & MEMS/NEMS (NLIM) at the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. He is an internationally recognized expert of tribology and mechanics on the macro- to nanoscales, and is one of the most prolific authors. He is considered by some a pioneer of the tribology and mechanics of magnetic storage devices and a leading researcher in the fields of nanotribology and nanomechanics using scanning probe microscopy and applications to micro/nanotechnology. He has authored 5 technical books, more than 50 handbook chapters, more than 500 technical papers in referred journals, and more than 60 technical reports, edited more than 25 books, and holds 16 U.S. patents. He is co-editor of Springer NanoScience and Technology and co-editor of Microsystem Technologies Micro- & Nanosystems and Information Storage & Processing Systems (formerly called Journal of Information Storage and Processing Systems). He has given more than 250 invited presentations on five continents and more than 60 keynote/plenary addresses at major international conferences.

Dr. Bhushan is an accomplished organizer. He organized the first symposium on Tribology and Mechanics of Magnetic Storage Systems in 1984 and the first international symposium on Advances in Information Storage Systems in 1990, both of which are now held annually. He is the founder of an ASME Information Storage and Processing Systems Division founded in 1993 and served as the founding chair during 1993-1998. His biography has been listed in over two dozen Who's Who books including Who's Who in the World and has received more than two dozen awards for his contributions to science and technology from professional societies, industry, and U.S. government agencies. He is also the recipient of various international fellowships including the Alexander von Humboldt Research Prize for Senior Scientists, Max Planck Foundation Research Award for Outstanding Foreign Scientists, and the Fulbright Senior Scholar Award. He is a foreign member of the International Academy of Engineering (Russia), Byelorussian Academy of Engineering and Technology and the Academy of Triboengineering of Ukraine, a honorary member of the Society of Tribologists of Belarus, a fellow of ASME, IEEE, STLE, and the New York Academy of Sciences, and a member of ASEE, Sigma Xi and Tau Beta Pi.

Dr. Bhushan has previously worked for the R & D Division of Mechanical Technology Inc., Latham, NY; the Technology Services Division of SKF Industries Inc., King of Prussia, PA; the General Products Division Laboratory of IBM Corporation, Tucson, AZ; and the Almaden Research Center of IBM Corporation, San Jose, CA.

Good starting point for education professionals

Whereas I'm an Ornstein fan, I expected to like this book. It covers the main subjects of education administration while providing a lifetime's worth of references for further reading and research. In some ways, this book is a summary of the growing body of literature up to the point when it was published.
