26 Itallian Songs and Arias--The Authoritative Edition

This edition is generally thought to supplement, or even replace the old G. Schirmer "Twenty-Four Italian Songs and Arias of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries." The repertoire is almost identical, however there is much more information in this edition, such as literal, word for word translations for each song. . This alone makes it an extremely useful and invaluable tool for classical singers. The original manuscript is also included for many of the songs.

This edition also contains pronunciation guides, background information about each song and composer and the "poetic thought" behind each song. There are also suggestions for style-appropriate ornamentation for each song, although the ornamentation is written in smaller notes alongside of the melodic line and is sometimes hard to decipher.

Probably the biggest difference between the two editions is the piano accompaniment. Paton's accompaniment is less elaborate and more authentic. Because it often does not double the vocal line, it may be slightly more difficult for less-experienced singers.

All in all, this edition is a must-have for classical singers, voice students, teachers of singing, and vocal coaches.

Good old standards

This anthology is a valuable resource for voice students and teachers. The best features of this edition are the IPA and word for word translations of the texts, and historical background on the pieces. Some of the accompaniments are a bit clunky. There are several Italian art song anthologies available. I think it is best to own several different editions, if you are a teacher. I find that I prefer the accompaniments of some songs more in some of the other anthologies, and sometimes a slightly different key helps a particular student. The keys in this edition tend to be lower than in the Schirmer medium low voice edition.

My favorite reference in a respectable library

Has become my favorite reference in a busy Newborn Intensive Care Unit (Level III+). Very complete. The defect illustrations are better than anything on the internet. Great for adding explanations to parents and great teaching tools for staff. The medication section is very helpful. I love that this has been updated. Kudos to the authors. I recommend the large edition.

I loved the first edition and the second edition, and the third edition with a slight title change does not disappoint. Somehow the author makes each new edition even better! This is the best drawing textbook I have ever seen. Thorough, written with clarity and beautifully illustrated. Rockman makes even the most complicated processes (like perspective) easy to understand. This book is an invaluable resource for both students and teachers of drawing. It's a keeper!

Theories of the Past Still Ring True Today

I found this book to be entertaining and revealing. The basic of many modern exercise programs originated with Bob Hoffman and his training methods. It put everything from single set training, volume training, heavy light training and muscle confusion programs are all listed here, years before they became popular. Easy reading and eye opening. I look forward to my next purchase.

Inspiring page turner

Tukmakov describes in a very entertaining prose different ways of unsettling the opponent, by playing outrageous moves. The reader is offered a diagram ( there could be more, the positions are very tactical and more diagrams would come in handy) and most often, he will find difficult to chose the "bluffing move". Surprisingly difficult, also, is to find the right move in defense - after Tal, Larsen, Morozevitch or Jobava has tried a dubious sacrifice, for example. The author insists on the psychological aspect of the game, tells many stories and try to interpretate the thought of both players, with open subjectivity and humour. Most of the -many- games are well known, but we rediscover them with great pleasure and fun. The reader will certainly risk some bluff in his next games !

Another Classic: A different kind of Book! Must read!!!

A very interesting Book!
I play chess as an hobby. I have an FM title and Correspondence chess GM title.
1) This book is very interesting, and is very entertaining. Fun to read!
2) it is not a classical book, showing you how to play in a classical position.
It shows risky moves (sometimes just crazy!). moves that would open your eyes, and ask yourself if it is really sound.
3) level 1600-2800 fide, wide range. (under 1600, games are won by tactics) This book is also about tactics, but in a not clear way, result not known, circumstances sharp, players on the edge)
4) Sometimes, great masters take risks (not all sound or correct), but how much is sound and how much is calculates risk? What is the boundary between the truth and imagination?
5) ie: Tal, Shirov (even kramnik and carlsen !!!), taking decisions that are at the edge. maybe sound, but...... Not like Fischer games or kasparov's games, which were almost correct and they could escape with a draw... These are decisions that are almost bluff, almost incorrect.. but almost......
6) he also shows how this can ne risky (Mameyerov's game) and sometimes may backfire...
7) Some games from morozvich and larsen would also fit perfectly in this book.
8) So, at times when you feel like you want to get a little crazy and get out of ordinary and have the corage of that risky move, which may not be completely sound, but you really want to play...... It is these positions that he analyzes...The truth: in between, sound or not...Decisive games in which normal positions don't apply.. Something to learn for every one.
9) SUMMARY: Very easy and fun reading and also very educational...A very interesting book. Entertaining... Not a routine book...But also teaching (time trouble risky moves that win , with examples etc) The boundary between sound and unsound (fantasy) ? sound vs unsound......
I would recommend this book for beginner to GM level. it gives clear examples of how sometimes it is OK to "get crazy" or "original" depending how the result turns out! Human weaknesses and strengths.. You have to apply it to yourself.. Everyone would get something different form this book.

Very interesting but with one error.

The book is very interesting but there is a flaw: the end of it the index of games is wrong! Beggining on the 3rd chapter the number of the page of a certain game is completely wrong. For instance it says page 84 when it is really page 83. The typos continue till the end where there is a Carlsen game that it would be on page 225 when the book has just 225 pages!! I think the editors should be more carefull about such errors.It doesn't really affect the content of the book but makes it hard to find a game.

About the Author

Jean Berko Gleason, PhD. is one of the world’s leading experts on children’s language and one of the founding mothers of the field of psycholinguistics. She created the famous Wug Test, which reveals how children learn the rules of language, such as how to make singular words plural. Her current work investigates parents’ speech and the interactive nature of language acquisition.  She is the author of leading textbooks in her field and many influential studies of aphasia, language development, gender differences in language, and language in the Roma community in Hungary. Dr. Berko Gleason is Professor Emerita in the department of psychology at Boston University.  A member of the Academy of Aphasia, she is past president of the International Association for the Study of Child Language and of the Gypsy Lore Society.  Her work is frequently cited in the professional literature, and has been featured in the popular media. She is profiled in the PBS online Nova Science Now series The Secret Life of Scientists.

 

Nan Bernstein Ratner, Ed.D., C.C.C. is Professor and Chair, Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences, University of Maryland at College Park. Dr. Bernstein Ratner is the editor of numerous volumes, and author of numerous chapters and articles addressing language acquisition and fluency in children. Many of her research reports can be found in the Journal of Speech and Hearing Research and other major journals, with chapters in major texts on child speech and language development. With Jean Berko Gleason, Dr. Bernstein Ratner is the author of the text Psycholinguistics as well as prior editions of Language Development.  Dr. Bernstein Ratner currently serves as Co-editor of Seminars in Speech and Language. In 1996, Dr. Ratner was made a fellow of the American Speech Language and Hearing Association. In 2006, she was presented with the Distinguished Researcher Award by the International Fluency Association.

This book is very dense with a lot of information, but the material is really interesting. They have a lot of well-educated, high level authors, including authors from Harvard University, and it explains the subject very well.

Fascinating concepts. Presentation could be better.

I bought this for a Language Development class. Concepts are fascinating and the case studies are good, but the way it is presented is highly unappealing. I fell asleep every time I tried to start reading the chapters and eventually relied on class notes for the midterms and finals.

Extremely boring read. Too heavy on informational content and lacking in easy-reading stories and examples. The combination of paper type and font is extremely harsh on the eye when reading for long period of time.
