I purchased because it said "Very Good" condition, but in reality it was in "Good" condition. I could of bought a cheaper one in better or the same condition.

Gave great advice

This little book was our bible on a recent trip to Rome. I will always be grateful that DK included San Clemente in their top 10. This amazing little church is like a layer cake of fascinating things to see. The street level is a lovely 12th century church with beautiful floors, columns, and frescoes. Underneath is an excavated 4th century church that includes a frescoe with the first sentence ever written in Italian: "Fili de le pute traite", or "Pull, you sons of whores!" I kid you not. This level also includes the tomb of Saint Cyril, creator of the Cyrillic alphabet, and a wonderful tombstone with a pagan inscription on one side, and on the other, an early Christian inscription -- it was recycled! They have it set up so you can flip it over to see both sides. Finally, the bottom level has ancient ruins, including a Mithraic (pagan) shrine.

The only time the book let us down was its recommendation of Da Augusto, a restaurant in Trastevere. This was their #1 listing under "Cheap Eats" for Trastevere but it was the only unappetizing food we were served in our whole trip.

Pretty good

We took this on our Rome trip- I'd use it again because it was a great way to narrow down things we wanted to see, and to discover new cool things we wouldn't have thought of otherwise. The accuracy was really hit or miss- don't trust this book for bus routes, business hours, or historical facts.

About the Author
John Shipley Tilley was born in Conyers, Georgia in 1880. He earned his M.A. at Harvard and went on to become a successful attorney in Alabama. The grandson of a Confederate veteran, Tilley was a strong defender of the Southern cause, authoring two other books on the subject of the War Between the States: Lincoln Takes Command, which examines the historical details behind the Fort Sumter affair, and The Coming of the Glory, a study of the history of slavery in the United States, State sovereignty and the right of secession, and the events of the War and Reconstruction. He passed away in Montgomery, Alabama in 1968.

I wish everyone would read this book.

This is a great book. I wish everybody would take the time to read this book. If you're even thinking of buying this book, don't hesitate!! It will be the best $6 you spend on Amazon. This book was first published in 1951. The author was born in1880, shortly after the war between the states was over. He was around while people who lived through the war were still alive and could still tell it like it was. Not the political correctness that has distorted the truth more and more with each passing year. Read this short 77 page book and it will open your eyes. This book will also give you all this facts you need in the event somebody thinks you're a racist for displaying the confederate flag. Display the confederate flag proudly. There is nothing to be ashamed of. I wish more people would proudly display the confederate flag, even if it's just a license plate or sticker on your car. The flag stands for southern pride and standing up for what's right it's not about racism or hate. Arm yourself with the facts.

Five stars for brevity and references. Able to read further following the citations as sources. Very little hyperbole. Seems to be simply presenting historical evidence rather than presenting an editorial. Great read for those seeking to understand the circumstances surrounding the war.

A Paradigm Shift in Agricultural Thought

You hear so much marketing these days about this is a new paradigm or that is a new paradigm. If you want to understand the definition of what a true paradigm is, then simply read this book. A paradigm is defined as an example serving as a model and that folks is exactly what we have here. . The current "state-of-the-art" in agriculture is defined by big agro-chemical companies dictating what the farmer must use for seed, fertilizer, herbicides, pesticides, etc. The small family farm concept has been dead in America for years. All the runoff from the big farms enters our surface water, groundwater, and oceans laden with harmful chemical that are literally killing every ecosystem on the earth (land, water, ocean, and air). With World population growth rates poised to put us at 10 Billion people by 2050, we simply do not have the amount of arable land available that it will take to feed this super population. At least not with current agricultural methods. Here enters Despommier and his troop of Grad students to show us how to think outside the box concerning an issue that will effect every one of us 7+ billion beings before we leave this Earth for parts unknown. That is having enough quality food to eat. It's hard for us Americans to sit down on our computers in our world of overabundance and contemplate that millions of kids die yearly from starvation. We think that only happens "over there, wherever there is". The truth is that it happens at home too, and in the relatively near future here is likely to become over there if we don't step up to prevent it. As our world gradually warms to levels humankind has not ever seen we will be dealing with climate changes that will rip apart our status quo agricultural systems. Imagine as our coastal cities become flooded that there is water everywhere but none fit to drink. What was until recently considered severe weather will become the norm, and new extremes will develop. If we could only slam on the breaks now and move backwards with respect to how we treat out Earth we might be able to salvage some of it. But we just keep humming along abusing our natural resources without a second thought. But wait, here is a glimmer of hope. A light at the end of the tunnel so to speak. By completely modifying how we produce our food and redefining how we use our resources to farm, we can accomplish an about face. If we can simply get the ball rolling it will snowball all by itself. I won't event try to explain how a Vertical Farm works or why it is such an amazing concept because the book does this so eloquently that my words wouldn't compare. Please just read it and think how the world would change for your kids and grand kids if we took the time and effort to make this happen. Good luck and I will see you on Level 4 of the first vertical farm (that one will be mine).

Inspiring!

Two and a half years ago I was looking across the street and saw a Safeway supermarket with an empty roof. I thought to myself, why don't we put farms on top of buildings so that we have more local food?

Last month, I finally got to finishing Dr. Despommier's The Vertical Farm. As someone who is passionate about finding innovative solutions to environmental problems, I found this book inspiring.

First, Dr. D takes introduces some of the most important issues related to our unsustainable agriculture system. This is great for readers who might not be sustainability experts. If you are such an expert, this will be a good refresher of sustainable agriculture. The rest of the book explores the vertical farm as a concept and what role it might play in the future sustainable city. It has images of concept farms, the main systems involved, and the basics of soil-less growing techniques.

A lot of the reviews on here are critical of the author's visionary thinking and criticize the book for using "could", "would" and "should" too much.

We won't get very far in making our societies sustainable without imagining solutions for the future as this book does. Our best ideas came from imagining what might be possible.

The Vertical Farm is a great read for those looking to be inspired by a sustainable vision of future cities.

Interesting tidbits of information and step by step build up of case for vertical farms. Short on detail however, if you want to build one. Book is Appropriate for city planners and social scientists. Took one star out as some gardening content on what would be needed to make hydroponics and aquaponics feasible in such vertical farms would have been worthwhile.

This book is a must have for all adherents of IFA and ORISA, and really to anyone interested. The book covers a most central topic/theme in our Traditions -- one which is more often than not misunderstood, both in the Diaspora and in Afrika. I really cannot recommend this book enough.
I pray that OLODUMARE via the ORISA will continue to bless and protect the author and all those who contributed to her work. Ase O

The best veg burger cookbook I have seen

This cookbook has a great variety of burger recipes. Many others like it have mainly variations on bean burgers. Not this. It has a wide range of base ingredients and numerous methods. It gives me lots of inspiration to adapt to ingredients I have on hand. Taste is subjective. I found that a number or recipes were either very over or very under seasoned for me. The falafel style burger needed lots more spice to mimic real falafel flavor. Another had so much fresh ginger that no other flavors were detectable. Yet another called for so much sun dried tomato that I knew to cut way back on the quantity. Sometimes the recipes weren't specific enough - example: a burger calls for one celery root. Well, there is enough of a size difference in celery root to really affect the burger. A measured cup quantity would have turned out a more successful product. Those burgers came out much too watery due to using a largish celery root. I also found that the burger size or quantity was not consistent. Following a recipe and shaping the given number of servings could result in a giant burger or an appropriately sized one. Finally, my pet peeve: no nutritional information is given. I still give this 4 stars because the second time you make any of these recipes, the burger can be exceptional if you know your ingredients. Again, lots of inspiration using many different non-meat bases. If this book had been properly tested, edited and included nutritional info, I would be buying it over and over as a gift.

Brings Much Needed Variety to Veggie Patties

I was intrigued by this title, and it has a very reasonable price, so I ordered a copy. Not knowing the author or the publishing company, or having heard anything about the book, other than having it come up on an amazon random suggestion, I was wary. Well, it appeared in the mail, and I was immediately intrigued by many of the recipes. I paged through and wanted to immediately make almost all the burgers. I am sitting at my desk to an extraordinary lunch right now of a baked quinoa and spinach burger. [I topped it with melted cheddar.]

Let's face it. Veggie patties can be extraordinarily boring, but I've been striving to eat less meat at lunchtime and have been buying the pre-packaged frozen selections. This book is fantastic for making your very own, from-scratch burgers.

The variety is awesome! Lentils, beans, mushrooms, quinoa, spinach, veggies. Now I could eat veggie burgers every day and not feel like I'm eating the same old thing.

Seriously, this quinoa/spinach burger is so delicious. I'm going to stop writing this review and enjoy my lunch. Buy this book. It's awesome.

Great veggie burgers, but some recipes are complex

I like this book, I really do. The veggie burgers here are very, very tasty and most of the recipes are well thought out. Lukas Volger starts off explaining the basic ingredients to make a good veggie burger and then dives into some really delicious recipes: bean, grain, and nut burgers; vegetable burgers; tofu, seitan, and tvp burgers. He includes a really nice section on making your own burger buns (and these are GREAT!) with information about making them gluten-free. There are sections on salads and sides and condiments to go along with the burgers.

A few of my favorites are the bean burgers, mushroom burgers, pub grub burgers, and Portobello burgers.

*BUT* even though I like this book so much and successfully have made a number of the recipes, I have some real concerns about the way he has put some of them together. First, the recipes are for four or six burgers and these are just too much unless you are cooking for a large family or a party. I constantly have to cut down on the ingredients to make burgers for just one, two or three of us.

Second, the lists of ingredients for some of the burgers are insanely long. For instance, the recipe to make six tempeh burgers has 23 separate ingredients. I appreciate the attempt to make a good recipe, but I am not going to scrounge up 23 different ingredients for a veggie burger, no matter how tasty. (Do I really need to add 1/4 teaspoon each of garlic powder and onion powder for six burgers?)

And finally, I wish he had included nutritional information for each of the recipes. Knowing the fat, sodium, calorie, and cholesterol content would make it easier to choose recipes.

But generally speaking, the recipes are extremely good and the end results are excellent. This cookbook has a permanent place in my kitchen.

About the Author
Marty Neumeier is an author, designer, and business adviser whose mission is to bring the principles and processes of creativity to industry. His series of “whiteboard” books includes The Brand Gap, widely considered the foundation of modern brand-building; Zag, named one of the “top hundred business books of all time” for its insights into brand strategy; and The Designful Company, a guide to building a culture of nonstop innovation. His latest book, The 46 Rules of Genius, lays out a universal map to innovation mastery.
    In 1996, Neumeier founded Critique magazine, the first journal about design thinking. He has worked closely with innovative companies such as Apple, Netscape, Sun Microsystems, HP, Adobe, Google, and Microsoft to help advance their brands and cultures.
    Today he serves as Director of Transformation for Liquid Agency in Silicon Valley, and travels extensively as a workshop leader and speaker on the topics of innovation, brand, and design. Between trips, he and his wife divide their time between California and southwest France.

How to become - if not a genius - at least someone who thinks more creatively and enjoys life more, indeed much more

I have read and reviewed all of Marty Neumeier's previously published books and consider his latest, The 46 Rules of Genius, the most important...thus far...because it will have wider and deeper impact. How so? Neumeier agrees with Tom and David Kelley (among others) that almost anyone can think more creatively if (HUGE "if") they are determined to think more creatively about how they think.

In his recent book, Metaskills, he identified and examined five talents that people need to develop in order to thrive "in an age of increasing man-machine collaboration." They are "feeling, or empathy, and intuition; seeing, or systems thinking; dreaming, or applied imagination; making, or design talent; and learning. None of these needs a high I.Q. What they need is a high regard for creativity." The 46 rules are creative rules. "They're general guidelines to help you envision, invent, contribute, and grow."

It is noteworthy that Rule 1 is "Break the Rules," hence a paradox: "Here's how to resolve the Genius Paradox:

1. React to the rules by embracing them or breaking them.
2. Observe the results.
3. Rewrite the rules from your own experience.

"You'll find there ARE rules for creativity -- YOUR rules. They may not be the ones that others follow but they'll be true and useful to you."

Neumeier carefully organizes and presents his information, insights, and counsel within four Parts, each of which poses a critically important question that many (if not most) of his readers have and to which he then responds:

1. How can I innovate?
2. How should I work?
3. How can I learn?
4. How can I matter?

He includes an observation by Arthur Schopenhauer with which I wholly agree: "Talent hits a target no one else can hit; genius hits a target no one else can see."

Here in Dallas near the downtown area, there is a Farmer's Market at which merchants offer fresh fruit as samples of their wares. In that spirit, I now offer additional excerpts that suggest the thrust and flavor of Neumeier's thinking:

o "Caution: The 46 Rules of Genius is not for everyone, for the simple reason that not everyone can be a genius. This is not usually a failing of native intelli9gence. It is more likely a lack of (a) will, or (b) skill." From the preface, "What Is a Genius?" (Page 21)

o "The framework [of a problem] is the boundary drawn around it. the 'rope of scope' that keeps it from sprawling to infinity. It narrows the focus, suggests a direction for the work, limits the investment, and determines how success is measured. If the framework is wrong, everything else will be wrong." (23)

o "Too much freedom can lead to mediocrity. Why? Because without boundaries there's no incentive to break through them. A real genius has no difficulty redefining a brief or defying convention. It's second nature. But give a creative person too much freedom, and you'll get a final product that's over-designed, over-worked, over-budget, and under-focused. The greatest gift you can give a genius is limitation, not license." (26)

o "The 'dragon pit' is the gap between WHAT IS and WHAT COULD BE. It's a space filled with discomfort, darkness, and doubt. Most people would rather grab the first rope thrown to them -- WHAT IS -- rather than stay and fight the dragon guarding WHAT COULD BE. But WHAT COULD BE is where the ideas are. A genius is someone who can tolerate the discomfort of uncertainty, while generating as many ideas as possible." (31)

o "Learning to learn is a metaskill -- a skill applied to itself. It multiplies your knowledge and accelerates your progress. When you learn to be your own teacher, you can acquire any skill you put your mind to. You can quickly build a new skill on the roof of the last one. You can move laterally from one skill to the next by bringing deeply understood principles to related disciplines. The ability to direct your learning is personal growth squared." (79)

o "Without the skills of your craft, you might be able to come up original ideas. But you'd have difficulty making your ideas stick -- demonstrating, developing, testing, and sharing them. Skills bridge the gap between thinking and making. There are no skills without practice -- practice is the exercise gym of genius." (110)

These are among the dozens of passages that caught my eye throughout Marty Neumeier's thoughtful and eloquent narrative and, obviously, no brief commentary such as mine can possibly do full justice to the scope and depth of his coverage. However, I hope I have at least indicated why I think so highly of him and his work. His latest book is another brilliant achievement. Bravo!

You're a Genius

If you've never read any of the books by Marty Neumeier, this is a great place to start. Neumeier has a way of helping you focus your own creative thoughts and impulses so you can see them more clearly.

If you've ever wondered… Where should I look for great ideas? Is my intuition working for me or against me? Are my ideas brilliant or merely good? Stop wondering and read this book.

THE 46 RULES OF GENIUS may be a little book but it has a BIG IDEA: Anyone of average intelligence can be a genius at something, as long as he/she is willing to work at learning the necessary skills.

In my opinion, this amazing book is THE resource for understanding and solving any kind of creative problem. With so much insight and information packed onto every page, it makes me wish I had a photographic memory, instant recall, or both. I found myself saying again and again: “Yes, that’s right! That makes sense! My students need to read this book!”
