About the Author

Ralph E. Hanson is the chair of the Department of Communication at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Previously, he was on the faculty of the P.I. Reed School of Journalism at West Virginia University where he taught for fifteen years. For more than fifteen years he has taught media literacy and introduction to mass communication. He was a founding developer of West Virginia University’s online extended learning program He has also taught newswriting, blogging and commentary writing, community journalism, and diffusion of innovations. Ralph has a bachelor’s degree in journalism and anthropology from Iowa State University, a master’s degree in journalism from Iowa State, and a doctorate in sociology from Arizona State University. Poorly written and fact checked

I highly recommend passing on this book. While it is very up to date, unfortunately there is a lot of information that is useless of just wrong. The information is presented in a very unprofessional manner such as spending a page talking about how the author enjoys a specific channel on Twitch. The content is easy to read, but that is because it is very informal.
You will likely come across a few names of key people and inventions that changed the communications world, but for the most part you will find nothing of value.

Tim Wu argues that this is not simply the byproduct of recent inventions but the end result of more than a century's growth and expansion in the industries that feed on human attention. From the pre-Madison Avenue birth of advertising to TV's golden age to our present age of radically individualized choices, the business model of "attention merchants" has always been the same. He describes the revolts that have risen against these relentless attempts to influence our consumption, from the remote control to FDA regulations to Apple's ad-blocking OS. But he makes clear that attention merchants grow ever-new heads, and their means of harvesting our attention have given rise to the defining industries of our time, changing our nature - cognitive, social, and otherwise - in ways unimaginable even a generation ago.

I greatly enjoyed this book. Not too in depth about the history of advertising the author provides background as to the sea change moments over 100 years of industry. Also reads fast and well paced.

Very impressive history of an interesting side effect of our information age

We often refer to our civilization as the information age. Maybe a slightly more descriptive metaphor would be our advertising sponsored “free” information age. Tim Wu does an outstanding job of mapping out the history leading to this “free” information age. He starts a long time ago when Benjamin Day started a newspaper in New York City in the 1830s based on a revolutionary model at the time of being funded primarily by print advertising. Unlike his competitors, he sold his daily at a big loss. But, he more than made up for it by advertising. He started the business by creating unsolicited ads in his newspaper to trigger the interest of the merchants he had advertised on their behalf without their asking. Tim Wu goes on meticulously on detailing a succession of pioneers that will essentially leverage derivatives of this pioneering advertising sponsored business model onto radio, TV, internet, and ultimately mobile. By the end the advertising merchants have created trading networks that make hedge fund nanotraders seem like boy scouts on bicycles. Indeed, such advertising networks make so many near instant decisions to route whatever the most relevant ad is delivered to the highest commercial bidder on monitor and screens of all sizes.

At almost any time there is a tension or trade-off between getting wonderful information services for much below cost or entirely free and essentially suffering from advertising pollution that impairs our brain’s focus to achieve what we were meant to do on this earth.

Tim Wu feels the above issue has reached a boiling point. He is not alone. Even technology industry leaders have taken that position. In one of the last chapters, he focuses on Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, who championed this position. He indicated that the advertising invasion is really impairing customer experiences including underperformance (in terms of speed, video-streaming quality, etc.) of all related information appliances when surfing the internet. Along those lines Tim Cook delivered ad-blockers that are readily available on all Apple’s devices.

Tim Cook’s position is both laudable and self-serving (and not necessarily in a bad way, but a smart way). When you think of the four major behemoths of the technology field: Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Apple; they increasingly overlap and compete with each other over various domains be it cell phones, cloud servers, operating systems, and numerous other software platforms. But, when you look at the funding sources the first two (Google and Facebook) are essentially dominant advertising agencies. Meanwhile, Amazon is the major retail clearinghouse middleman who also benefits a great deal from advertising. On the other hand, Apple is from a funding source standpoint in a silo earning a buck the old fashion way by selling mainly hardware (I Phones, I Pads, I Watch) and services (music, apps). It does not make money from advertising. So, for Tim Cook to lead and facilitate the campaign of the ad-blockers is a direct arrow at the advertising based business of his main competitors.

In the last chapter, Tim Wu goes on that we should regain our consciousness and our focus. We should think more deliberately about the choice we make. Do we want to keep on selling ourselves for “free” to be part of massive audiences that are very lucratively marketable by the Big 3 (Facebook, Google, Amazon)? I have recently experienced what it is like. I just recently got a mini I Pad, a really cool little machine. And, I remember attempting to read a serious article that demanded focus in order to be understood. The mini I Pad screen is plenty big for reading. However, it seems that nearly three fourth of the screen was wasted on ads in various forms. And, I literally could not practice the type of slow attentive reading I needed to understand the article. I quickly gave up and read the article a few days later on a printed copy with no problem and a lot more enjoyment and retention. So, I should consider the ad-blocker apps as many of you have already. And, Tim Wu’s nearly spiritual call at the end does promote such attitude. Let’s reclaim the independence of our brain. Let’s focus. Let’s maximize the outcome of our respective destinies.

Tim Wu’s position is really attractive and nearly unquestionable. Could one really take the opposite position? Let’s waste our time being distracted by an unending stream of advertisement and related vapid entertainment and distraction and don’t leave a legacy whatsoever of our passage on earth. Ok, that’s not a very good rebuttal of Tim Wu’s position.

However, if we look at the underlying economics the underlying argument may get more complicated. Let’s say the Big 3 entirely loose out their ad revenues. And, they do not make enough from selling various apps and games to cover their costs. They actually would have to charge for their “free services.” They could use different models such as monthly subscriptions or paying for each unit of services. Given that, how much would you be willing to pay monthly to maintain access to your Facebook profile and its related networking activities? How much would you be willing to pay for one single Google search? Similarly, how much would Facebook and Google have to charge to effectively cover their lost advertising revenues? Those questions become a chicken and the egg issue because the price affects the demand. For “free” those services have nearly infinite demand. But, for any realistic price the demand for all those “free” services would crater. Such economic questions most often render problems or issues much more complicated than otherwise. This economic conundrum was not Tim Wu’s objective when writing “The Attention Merchants.” And, that is perfectly fine. His book probably packs in a more effective punch by focusing on the tension between “The Attention Merchants” and the self-actualization of our own focused consciousness.

Still the best book on modern presentation design and delivery

I have been reading Garr Reynold's Presentation Zen blog even before the first book came out. Getting Presentation Zen (The Book) was just the next logical step, since it provides all that useful information you can find on the website in a structured, readable, and easily accessible way. Four years and another two books (Presentation Zen Design and The Naked Presenter) later, there is now a second edition of the original Presentation Zen book. What can we expect from it?

What's new?

It's somewhat ironic that the first testimonial in the book states that "it's often the slim books that have the most impact" when the second edition of Presentation Zen is noticeably thicker than the first. 60 additional pages or 25% more, to be exact.

At a first glance, there are still the same 5 sections as in the first edition:

1. Introduction
2. Preparation
3. Design
4. Delivery
5. The Next Step

On closer inspection, the Delivery section has gained an additional chapter, The Need for Engagement, which accounts for about half of the additional pages. The rest are distributed over the other chapters, some of which gained a few more pages that way. Most of those changes are subtle and you often won't notice them unless you compare both editions side by side. References to iPads and Prezi (both of which only came out after the first edition) or photos from TEDxTokyo 2011 are also signs of a discreet update. You'll also find content that Garr published on the Presentation Zen blog during 2011, e.g. from an article on the power of faces.

The Need for Engagement, the new chapter, picks up some thoughts from The Naked Presenter, Garr's third book. In fact, it very much resembles chapter 4, Engage with Passion, Proximity, and Play from that book in that it talks about emotions, mirror neurons, and the need to remove barriers. It's not a straight copy, though, but the same ideas re-explained.

Obviously, this second edition of Presentation Zen is not a radical rewrite but a careful update. Things have been made clearer or explained in more detail where necessary, new content has carefully been injected where appropriate. If you know the first edition, it still feels like the same book and you're only left wondering if some specific nugget is really new or if you've overlooked it the last time you read the book. I seem to remember Garr stating that "It's the same book, only better" or words to that effect. That about sums it up.

What's old?

All subtle and more obvious changes aside, Presentation Zen is still THE book to read on modern presentation design and delivery. Presentation Zen is an approach, not a method or blueprint that you have to follow slavishly. The idea is to create and deliver the best possible presentation for your specific audience. And while that obviously means more work in preparation, Garr provides the encouragement that it's worth it if you want to really reach your audience. The Presentation Zen book contains all that you need to make this happen, backed up with scientific evidence where needed and supported with real-life examples. On top of that, it's easy to read and Garr's passion for his topic and his roots in Zen come across as honest without resorting to superlatives or over-the-top wording that plague so many nonfiction books by American authors. It's a joy to read and encourages you to give the Presentation Zen approach a try. What more can you expect?

The Verdict

What has been true for the first edition is even more so for the second one: If you're only going to buy one book about presentations, this should be it. It will provide you with all the necessary guidance for creating great, effective, and memorable presentations. When I'm working on a new presentation, I often open up the book at a random page and start reading. It always helps to either reinforce an aspect I was already working on or reminds me of something I need to think about. In other words, it's a great source of inspiration, even 4 years after its first publication and after having re-read it (in whole or in parts) numerous times.

The second edition feels more "complete" now, by which I mean that the extra pages all add useful information and don't feel bolted on. The only downside, I guess, is that there's less need for buying The Naked Presenter now - but that's Garr's (and his publisher's) problem, not yours ;-) This, I guess, also answers the question what you should do if you already own the first edition. If you already have the first edition and The Naked Presenter, there's probably no need to rush and buy the second edition - unless your copy is beginning to fall apart from heavy use. But if you held back from buying Presentation Zen until now - don't wait any longer. Your audience will be grateful.

You Will Be Glad You Purchased This Book!

What a wonderful resource for ideas, tools, and inspiration. After a ten-year hiatus, I am moving from private practice to focusing on courses, workshops, and seminars. Realizing my presentation skills were rusty, after reading Naked Design in one sitting, I came back and immediately purchased Presentation Zen (2nd Ed). as with N/D, I couldn't put it down until the last page.

Presentation Zen gives marvelous guidance for creating truly effective and memorable presentations. As I am developing the 2012 programs, every time I open the book to clarify a point, find myself re-reading whole chapters again, and again, and picking up on another delightful nuance each time. Originally purchased the Kindle version but, as with Naked Design, decided to get the hard copy because it is one I will want to keep at hand for a long time. Worth every penny -- and much more!

I bought this book as part of a 3-fer special from Amazon - a couple of Nancy Duarte books and this one.
I learned a lot more from Nancy's books.
I'll save you the money from buying this book.
Here are the four important concepts presented. There is plenty of noise, but these 4 are the great ideas.

Empathy - not only logic
Play - not only seriousness
Meaning - not only accumulation

Notes that only you will see
Handout to be taken away

Healthy Stables Design Flaws

The most puzzling aspect of this book was the emphasis on passive ventilation and directions for stable orientation CONTRARY to everything else I've ever read or studied on passive heating and cooling (after my husband and I recently constructed a passive solar home that performs very well). The author's directions are also contrary to my personal experience in the natural heating, cooling, and ventilation performance (or lack thereof) of numerous stables visited by me and my horses over my 30+ years as a farm/ horse gal.
Mr. Blackburn advises that the stable be constructed perpendicular to prevailing winds but I couldn't disagree more as a stable with that orientation will have one of its broad sides facing the harsh western winds in most regions of the country (US) and both broad sides allowing undesirable heat and light in through all windows as the sun rises and sets on the east and west faces (consistent with the hottest summer and coldest winter barns I've ever NOT ENJOYED being stabled in). The most comfortable barns I've been in have the large aisle doors facing west and east to let a good cross breeze through that can be reduced by closing the west door entirely (in winter) and have operable windows in the stalls facing south to let in plenty of warmth and light in winter and north to let in cool breezes in summer. If the barn has good drainage, is kept clean and dry, and ventilation is carefully managed by opening and closing doors or windows on the sides of the barn with the most pleasant conditions, it will be fresh smelling and healthy inside regardless of orientation but a proper passive orientation will always foster more comfortable temperatures for horses and humans alike.
Also, Mr. Blackburn advises against storing hay in a loft above the horses but I have found that hay provides even greater insulation and temperature stability by holding body heat from the horses below and blocking drafts in winter and (more importantly) blocking excess heat from the roofing materials from radiating down in summer. Also, stable owners can save a great deal in labor expenses if they are able to purchase and store hay that has been handled only twice (pick up in field then store in their own hay loft) rather than that which has been handled and stored multiple times. Of course, you and your hay labor must be very careful to weed out any insufficiently dry bales to prevent smoldering and combustion. A stable with hay storage above is cooler in summer, reducing the need for fans (an alternate and equally dangerous source of fire). And, if the loft floor is tight and kept clean the dust and allergens are not a concern, in my experience.
Also, I am concerned about the amount of unwanted light and heat allowed in during the summer via Mr. Blackburn's translucent ridge - my experience tells me that horses want to flee the heat and bugs by being in a dark, cool stable during the hottest times of day in the summer.
In my opinion the "healthy by design" implied that the book should have covered the most important aspects to keeping horses happy and healthy which should have entailed frost-proof, reliable water distribution (indoors) and cultivating springs/ distribution systems (out) and frost-proof central mechanization and best location within the structure for extreme climates, some discussion of electrical safety and electrical planning, rodent-proof feed storage container design and formulas for calculating feed volume to be stored for various breeds, safe, dry, and convenient hay storage design and formula for calculating volume needed for one year supply, integrated, convenient bedding storage, frost-proof wash area design and best locations within the structure for extreme climates, safe, efficient stall design and best manufacturers, manure management for safety and convenience, window planning and safe, durable designs, and facility layout and best orientation to other structures and various points of access. As I plan my facility I want to know more about these things and numerous others such as how wide my integrated sawdust bin should be to accept large deliveries and how much turnaround space does a tractor-trailer (sawdust) or truck and trailer (hay) need, and countless other questions/concerns. These things CANNOT be an afterthought (especially reliable water!) and for this author they apparently don't even warrant concern.
As you can see, pretty pictures really are not enough for this reviewer although I must agree that this book is beautiful to look at and somewhat useful for contemplating the style of your new stable and building materials (though nearly all of the stables featured share the same high-end freestanding stall type as is pictured on its cover and can be viewed on various manufacturers sites) so there was no education to be found within and not much to contemplate after my thorough cover to cover reading of this book. If I could have loaned it from library first I would have known that I had little use for it. So, perhaps go to a book store or check with your library and decide for yourself before making the purchase.

A case of false advertising

This is a beautiful coffee table book, but it fails to address the issues of health and safety for the average barn owner. It shows beautiful, multi-million dollar show case designs, but the reader has to sort through a lot of narrative to distill out the design concepts that go into making a healthy and safe barn. The barns featured in this book are "to die for" beautiful, and fun to look at, but this book is no where near being a practical guide for the majority of people who are building, remodeling or even evaluating a barn for the health and safety of their horses.

This is an interesting and beautiful book but not what I expected

This is an interesting and beautiful book but not what I expected. It is more of an architectural description of very high end barns and not information that would be helpful in designing a smaller barn that most non-millionaires would build.

ground-breaking synthesis

This superb book, much cited in recent articles and studies, popularized the notion that culture is not something "out there", as conceived and taught in many language classrooms, but something created in interaction between people separated culturally, historically and socially. As Brian Street remarked about 6 years ago, "culture is a verb". This book has been instrumental in changing notions of what culture is and how it can be explored in all its rich manifestations--whether in the classroom or out.

The depth and sophistication of the book, far from being inhibitory, invites constant re-readings and new insights: 6 years of reading and re-reading has not exhausted the possibilities. Kramsch's remarkable blend of incisive yet delicately nuanced phrasing, yields a startling clarity of thought and style rare in academic discourse these days. The temptation to plagiarize is hard to resist. It is a pleasure to read this book, and if the term "food for thought" were ever well applied, it would be to this book.

Because of its inter-disciplinary approach and ground-breaking nature, this book should be read by anyone in fields remotely connected to language and culture--not just teachers mainly concerned with applying insights to the classroom. Language teaching is often dumbed-down and reduced to a matter of simply applying the currently-accepted methodology; Kramsch has revealed that language teaching can be (and should be) an intellectual endeavour. She has done nothing less than to revolutionize the nature of the field. We have everything to thank her for it.

This is an excellent overview of feminist issues--but it's not just filled with summaries of current thinking however, it also contains a lot of original work as well. The author takes a practical approach to various issues such as equal pay, whether women think differently from men, etc. It's not only a good book for learning about feminism, but also very good for learning more about critical thinking. Highly recommended.

No chords for the left hand

This book is a major disappointment. It failed to show chords for the left hand.

It does show treble and bass clefs, but only displays the chords for the right hand. I can't imagine why the author failed to show the left hand chords on the bass clefs in the images.

I need the left hand's chords for my keyboard. That's why I ordered the book.

Fortunately I bought it from Amazon and Amazon provided me with a postage-paid return label for full credit.

Jon Michael Miller, author of stories, novels, and a memoir, was a student at Ohio State University when the May 4 shootings at Kent State occurred. Ohio State had its own protest problems causing a campus shutdown. Thankfully no one was killed there. The Kent State shootings have haunted Miller ever since, however. Though the events have been studied, viewpoints aired, testimony given, conclusions proposed, we still struggle with questions of responsibility and justice. "Love and War at Kent State" offers a contemporaneous vantage point of campus events as they built through the months with no vision of what was about to happen that dreadful and lovely spring day on the Kent State campus. All other renditions the author knows about present the drama from hindsight, not as they began, simmered, boiled, and exploded in mayhem and death. Miller's novel presents such an imaginative vision of what many have seen as the climactic day of the national Vietnam protest movement.

A book about a critical time, a time of death on a college campus and the beginnings of the tremendous changes yet to come.

As historical fiction it works. I had a sense of the times, the situations and best, a sense of place. Kent State at a time in American history when the National purpose and direction of our country was being challenged by movements and social currents from war protesters to Black equality and to a small college trying to keep up with and adjusting to a younger view of Democracy. There are layers of conspiracy, manipulation and personal conflicts from love to parental prejudices and faculty failures and valiant adjustments. The author takes us around the campus, into the faculty rooms, into the minds of the radicals and the moderates. There is hope even after the disaster of the killings by National Guardsmen of four students. Two that were totally innocent of the dynamics that took their lives. A good book about a critical time in our Nations History.

Feeling History

I love this book because it combines passionate romance with real history. Since I was only one month old when the shootings at Kent State occurred, the incident didn't mean much to me until I got to college and became more interested in the Sixties. Now, later, this novel gave me an opportunity to discover what actually happened, how it all started, and how difficult it is to establish responsibility amid chaos. Yes, I understand that such situations can be murky in terms of responsibility, but I am absolutely sure of one thing--those troops should not have shot those students. Mr. Miller shows us the murkiness, however, of placing blame, and does so step by step in the development of a complex and page-turning love story. Thank you, Mr. Miller for providing a format in which we not only learn history, but feel it.

Life lived in turbulent times

I thoroughly enjoyed the intertwining of this well-written romance (from the male perspective!) and the engrossing details of a very turbulent time in our history. There are so many of us who remember the killing of students at Kent State University in 1970 -- those horrific photos on newspaper front pages across the country -- as if it just came out of nowhere. In this book we are right on the sidelines of history, watching for two and a half years as life on campus gradually careens out of control toward that heart-stopping moment. There were many unsung heroes in this story, and we needed to know that. An excellent read for both those of us who remember and those who didn't know.
