Overpriced and only half the answers

I don't mind if a company wants to publish an answer key to a textbook separately, but I take issue with leaving half of the problems unanswered. Only the odd numbered problems are answered here, and too many answers are incomplete--skipping critical steps and assuming the reader already knows them. Like biochemistry, learning statistics and other mathematics is more difficult when you are left to repeat the same mistakes over and over. You need the answers in order to learn completely. Since the textbook provides no answer key, this is the best you can do.

Solutions Manual Product Review

The whole idea of a solution workbook is to have the problems completed and explained step by step for clarification. This workbook only adresses less than 1/2 of the practice problems from text book. Additionally the clarifications which are given are as cryptic as the text book itself. ......With that said the subject material is challenging and marginal help is still better than none. That's why I rated this 3 out 5 stars.

Half of the solutions for a textbook written with half an effort

In my review of the Principles of Biostatistics, I noted that various parts of the book glazed over certain material, did not provide full explanations, and/or provided complicated solutions. Furthermore, the professor was required to step in and supplement the book's guide/instructions with their own, in order for the students to fully grasp/understand the content.

As such, taking that book into consideration, it is important to note that the solutions manual continues this trend. First, the Student Solutions Manual only provides answers to half of the problems from the Principles of Biostatistics book. Second, some of the answers do not follow the age old requirement of students to..."Show Your Work!".

In the end, you can check half of your answers and figure out most of these solutions with some steps still missing. It did come in handy, but it would've been nice to have the full answer guide when practicing every problem in the back of the chapters.

It advocates a strategic approach through which an institution sets clear goals and metrics and integrates the identity support work of cultural / diversity centers with skill building through cohort activities, enabling students to successfully navigate college, graduate on time and transition to the world of work. Underlying the process is an intersectional and identity-conscious, rather than identity-centered, framework that addresses the complexity of students’ assets and needs as they encounter the unfamiliar terrain of college.

In the current landscape of higher education, colleges and universities normally divide their efforts between departments and programs that explicitly work on developing students’ identities and separate departments or programs that work on retaining and graduating higher-risk students. This book contends that the gap between cultural/diversity centers and institutional retention efforts is both a missed opportunity and one that perpetuates the opportunity gap between students of color and low-income students and their peers.

Identity-consciousness, the central framework of this book, differs from an identity-centric approach where the identity itself is the focus of the intervention. For example, a Latino men’s program can be developed as an identity-centered initiative if the outcomes of the program are all tied to a deeper or more complex understanding of one’s Latino-ness and/or masculinity. Alternately, this same program can be an identity-conscious student success program if it is designed from the ground up with the students’ racial and gender identities in mind, but the intended outcomes are tied to student success, such as term-to-term credit completion, yearly persistence, engagement in high-impact practices, or timely graduation.

Following the introductory chapter focused on framing how we understand risk and success in the academy, the remaining chapters present programmatic interventions that have been tested and found effective for students of color, working class college students, and first-generation students. Each chapter opens with a student story to frame the problem, outlines the key research that informs the program, and offers sufficient descriptive information for staff or faculty considering implementing a similar identity-conscious intervention on their campus. The chapters conclude with a discussion of assessment, and suggested “Action Items” as starting points.

About the Author
Vijay Pendakur Dr. Vijay Pendakur serves as an Associate Vice President for Student Affairs at California State University – Fullerton. Prior to joining Cal State Fullerton, Dr. Pendakur served as the Director for the Office of Multicultural Student Success, a department charged with increasing the retention and persistence of low-income students, first generation students, and students of color at DePaul University in Chicago. He holds a bachelor's degree in history and East Asian studies from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, a master's degree in U.S. history from the University of California, San Diego, and a doctorate in education from DePaul University.

Shaun R. Harper is on the faculty in the Graduate School of Education, Africana Studies, and Gender Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, where he also serves as director of the Center for the Study of Race and Equity in Education. He is co­founder of the Penn GSE Black Male Grad Prep Academy, an initiative that prepares undergraduate men for doctoral study in education fields.

Professor Harper maintains an active research agenda that examines race and gender in higher education, Black male college access and achievement, and college student engagement. He is author of over 80 peer-­reviewed journal articles and other academic publications. His 10 books include: Student Engagement in Higher Education (2009, 2014), College Men and Masculinities (2010), and the 5th edition of Student Services: A Handbook for the Profession (2011).

He is co-editor of the Stylus Engaged Research and Practice for Social Justice in Education series; editor-in-chief of the Routledge book series on Race and Racism in U.S. Higher Education; and associate editor of Educational Researcher, a journal of the American Educational Research Association (AERA).

Dr. Harper is principal investigator of the New York City Black and Latino Male High School Achievement Study, a project that entailed individual interviews with 415 young men of color from 40 public high schools. Several associations have praised his scholarship, including the Association for the Study of Higher Education (2008 Early Career Award), AERA (2010 Early Career Award), and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (2012 Robert H. Shaffer Award for Faculty Excellence).

No other building in Japan holds such deep meaning for the people of the West. It is a marvelous evocation of all the richness and variety, the delicacy and color, of ancient Japan and a vital force in today's world of art. In his introductory essay, Walter Gropius, famed Bauhaus architect, discusses Katsura's relevance to the West and commends to all students of art and architecture its "sublime, mature solutions of the intricate problems of space and human scale - the very media for the art of architectural creation."

Built in the years 1620-1647 for the imperial prince Toshihito as a country villa near Kyoto, Katsura is at once the crown of the aristocratic tradition and a brilliant reflection of emergent popular elements. In his interpretive essay, the internationally-known Japanese architect Kenzo Tange identifies the great cultural forces that inspired the design of the palace and its gardens with the two basic orientations to life which have long opposed each other in Japan: the traditional "Yayoi" culture and the primitive "Jomon" culture. He shows how these forces and the mediating influence of Zen, are harmonized to create a work of surpassing excellence and vitality.

Katsura has profoundly influenced Japanese architecture and artistic taste and the ideas of modern architects, landscape designers, and interior decorators. Yasuhiro Ishimotos's photographs reveal to us of the supreme achievements in the artistic histories of the world.

One Possible Starting Point

Uses a system of a properly constructed stick figure to rough in your ideas, from which a finished figure can be built up. I find this speeds the process of sorting ideas, working up thumbnails, and roughing in crowd scenes, though I still rely on Hogarth for anything beyond that point. If Hogarth's dynamism (his trees writhe with energy) doesn't sit well with you, this big book is a passable alternative, though it does not cover as much as _Dynamic Figure Drawing_ does: things like foreshortening, the extremely tucked figure, or female [...] are not covered. A little too much time is spent on detailing small bones and deep muscles that make no difference in the drawing of what is visible.

Excellent book on simplified artistic anatomy. Takes work but well worth it. The chapters on the foot and on the head could be improved. It's also important to make the shapes three dimensional in your own work.

This is the first book I'd recommend to anyone wanting to study artistic anatomy. After slogging through other anatomy books,I found this one explaining everything I needed to know with simplicity and thoroughness. Not that other books are without merit, but this is the place to start. A treasure if you can find it!
