A slightly pear-shaped introduction to VC++.Net

The first thing I noticed about this text is the absence of the familiar colour coding used throughout the other volumes. Could this be a sign of publisher wariness, or simply cost cutting?
The book has much in common (including examples) with the other Deitel and Deitel .Net (C#, VB) volumes. Chapter development and layout is very similar. The standard of the material is mostly very good as one would expect, but topic coverage leaves something to be desired.
Firstly, it's a personal opinion, but I am not convinced that the several hundred pages devoted to web services is what students of C++ (and new professionals) need or want. Consequently, I ask myself whether this space should be shunted into a separate book. Secondly, there is a very small amount of space devoted to data structures, roughly 53 pages. Much smaller than needs be given the overall size of the book. Moreover, the reader only gets to data structures after 1000 pages of text. This apparent underemphasis on data structures raised a variety questions in my mind about the software engineering philosophy of the text. Thirdly, the book explicitly avoids dealing with ActiveX and COM. Attributes, a new feature in Visual C++ are mentioned in passing, and ATL is not mentioned at all.
Overalll, I am less postive about this book than their earlier proramming in C++ text. It seemed to me from reading the book, that there is a formula at play and material is shoehorned to fit accordingly. I fully acknowledge that much of the material is excellent and competently explained, but as an overall learning text on VC++.Net I think improvements are required.

Useful but not quite enough

I found that this book gave me good general information on VC++.NET but not quite enough. When going through the book I tried to write the sample pieces of code as I was going and there was just not quite enough information on each of the samples for me to write it with out having to go and copy the code from the examples. Also it wasn't clear what the project settings should be set to. Eventually I figured them out but it just wasn't quite enough.

I have been a C++/MFC Developer for 6 years and am finding the transition to .NET quite difficult. This book has not been the help that I was hoping for. I know the programming concepts but actually getting the proper syntax to work for simple things is taking quite a bit longer and the book does not have what I need.

Alright could of been better

Much like others have said he spent far too much time on areas in which are less important atleast in my eyes

While this book gives you a basic understanding in VC++ I found that it spent far too much time in the commandline

programing (MC++) when you could teach from the start learning doing it via text boxes/lables which would condence alot of the

reading making it less balky. Over 1/3rd of the book was on MC++ commandline programming! This book was also intended for

college courses and answers to the questions are not answered for those of us learning on our own which is a real downside

and made me skip ALOT of the questions at the end of chapters.

This book doesn't get into real detail about data structors which is an important aspect of programming in general which made me disapointed..

As Jody Blau said:

"Also, I found that its style of giving a few pages of code, followed by a few pages of explaining the code, could have been used much more effectively. Often the "explanations" involved simply stating "what" they did and not "why". "

is So true.

All in all I feel this book is alright but I'm sure theres better out there.

About the Author

Damian Conway holds a PhD in Computer Science and is an honorary Associate Professor with the School of Computer Science and Software Engineering at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia.Currently he runs an international IT training company--Thoughtstream--which provides programmer development from beginner to masterclass level throughout Europe, North America, and Australasia.Damian was the winner of the 1998, 1999, and 2000 Larry Wall Awards for Practical Utility. The best technical paper at the annual Perl Conference was subsequently named in his honour. He is a member of the technical committee for The Perl Conference, a keynote speaker at many Open Source conferences, a former columnist for The Perl Journal, and author of the book Object Oriented Perl. In 2001 Damian received the first "Perl Foundation Development Grant" and spent 20 months working on projects for the betterment of Perl.A popular speaker and trainer, he is also the author of numerous well-known Perl modules, including Parse::RecDescent (a sophisticated parsing tool), Class::Contract (design-by-contract programming in Perl), Lingua::EN::Inflect (rule-based English transformations for text generation), Class::Multimethods (multiple dispatch polymorphism), Text::Autoformat (intelligent automatic reformatting of plaintext), Switch (Perl's missing case statement), NEXT (resumptive method dispatch), Filter::Simple (Perl-based source code manipulation), Quantum::Superpositions (auto-parallelization of serial code using a quantum mechanical metaphor), and Lingua::Romana::Perligata (programming in Latin).Most of his time is now spent working with Larry Wall on the design of the new Perl 6 programming language.

This book has changed my life

This is a must-read for any Perl programmer. You are only as good as the teachers you have, and if your teachers use stuff like $|++, you are screwed. In this case, Conway would tell you to Use English;, and then you'd know what a $| is. A sampling of other tips:

Don't modify via $_ (too easy to screw things up)
Use hashes for arguments if arguments > 3 (trackability)
Use Croak instead of die (Croak gives more info, better for debugging)
Use ' ' instead of " " when no interpolation (less ambiguity)
Don't use unless (complication and confusion).
use /xms in regexes (for readability, and avoiding mistakes)
test when closing or opening a file

A few of the reviews here are 1 star. IMO these are people to which "freedom" is more important than "group code maintainability". This should really be the third Perl book for anybody, after Learning Perl and Intermediate Perl.

For those wanting to test their code against this book, there is a Perl Module, Perl::Critic, that does the job.

Excellent guide for writing better code

Not only do these practices apply to Perl, but they apply to any language. I have told several people who are not perl progreammers to references several of the practices since they hold true in any language.

This is a purely practical book on how to write code that anyone can read and follow with minmal effort. It covers various aspects of coding styles and gives clear concice reasons for WHY they should be used. You can for example, using this book, give a clear reference why spaces should be used over tabs, or why underscores in variable names are simply easier for humans to parse than CamelCase.
