"...[Nancy's] proven herself to be a lasting and loyal friend and someone that's worthy of being a personal confidant...I love her children, I hate her husband, for reasons I won't bother with now, mostly because he's there and I'm not. I would trust her with my money and my shorts" --Marlon Brando
A young woman meets Marlon Brando while working as an assistant in her father's Beverly Hills dental office. It's 1976. Brando's a screen legend. The twenty year old is enraptured by the fifty-two year old star of such classic American films as A Streetcar Named Desire, Viva Zapata!, The Wild One, On the Waterfront, The Godfather, and Last Tango in Paris. Brando's as dazzled by her-"I think I'm falling in love," he sighs, taking her hand in his to kiss-and on that day, he and Nancy Peardon embark on an intimate and tempestuous relationship that was to last another twenty-eight years until the actor's death in 2004.
Serving as Brando's on-again, off-again executive assistant, Peardon becomes his steadfast confidante, experiencing a side of the famously private actor few know about or could ever discern from his memorable roles, from Stanley Kowalski to Vito Corleone. He was mischievous, principled, idiosyncratic, volatile, enigmatic, fierce in his views on everything from the film industry to international affairs, but ultimately as vulnerable as a child. Marlon Brando: A Memoir explores Marlon Brando the man, behind Marlon Brando the myth, from the vantage point of someone who knew him like no other.

Review
"Their interactions are funny, shocking, and sad (especially as the actor's health deteriorated), and, more importantly, never gossipy or frivolous...Beyond simply humanizing Brando or elaborating upon his legacy, this memoir shows how complicated truly great friendships can be, and how rare genuine people are to come by. It is a warm, engaging book that begs to be shared." -- Film Comment|Film Society of Lincoln Center
"...this memoir isn't intended as another scathing account of the Hollywood icon. Instead, it's a loving--and gushing--tribute to a friend, warts and all...a vivid, easy read...A new, different twist on familiar Brando stories." --Kirkus Reviews
"A fascinating must-read for Brando fans." --Publishers Weekly

Another side of Brando
By Ralfonso
The Author was the daughter of Brando's dentist. She was 20 years old when they
met and he was 52.Their relationship lasted close to 30 years but according to her
they never had sex because she said Brando didn't want to find another dentist.Brando
was compulsive about his habits, whether it was food, sex,or when he was slighted
by his friends. He called her at work,at her home (even though she was married)and
over the years was employed and fired by him twice.
She comes across as a weak individual lacking confidence in her early years. Her
husband was an alcoholic and Brando warned her against marring him but she did
not heed his advice. Some of the conversations are interesting but also perverse,
Brando coming across as a serial manipulator and a misogynist. She comes across
as a victim and he in his words a "monster".
This book more or less reinforces information previously written about him but it is
still fascinating why we should still care about him after his death.

Marlon Brando: A Memoir
By Daniel F. Rousseau
Hemingway, in his preface to THE SNOWS OF KILAMANJARO, says that on the peak of the 19,710-foot Mount Kilamanjaro was found the dried and frozen carcass of a leopard. He adds, "No one has ever explained what the leopard was seeking at that altitude."
Nancy Peardon's MARLON BRANDO: A MEMOIR, offers to us the highly intelligent and sensitive Brando who, like Hemingway's leopard, sought his answers at the highest of altitudes - on the altar of pure friendship. And for nearly thirty years, he tested his friendship with Ms. Peardon, sometimes turning away, but always returning.
Trust is the core of any relationship, and Nancy Peardon has not violated that trust. In MARLON BRANDO: A MEMOIR, she has offered to us the man whose sensitive nature not only made him a great actor, but a true friend to those who proved themselves worthy.

a different look at brando
By david in FL
i've read most of the brando books and this is a welcome fresh perspective. it is not a standard bio, but a memoir and love story. she was the daughter of brando's dentist. they met when she was 20 and knew each other until his death 28 years later.
"he allowed me to love the man who lived sequestered behind the unfathomable persona of marlon brando," she writes, "and he made me feel unconditionally loved in return."
here's what he told her once: "nancy, you must understand, there are only five people in this world that i trust. and, as it turns out, you're one of those five people."
but their relationship wasn't always easy. he once locked her in the trunk of his car, just for sport. that anecdote, and others i'd read elsewhere about his mistreatment of people, brings to mind blanche dubois' words about deliberate cruelty -- "it is the one unforgivable thing." but peardon forgave and/or gave back during their quarrels.
one thing that distinguishes this book is its up close and personal nature. another is the graceful writing. other reviewers have mentioned her candor. indeed, you appreciate her honesty. she doesn't seem to have left much out. you'll come to like her as you read this book. as for brando, exasperating, charming and dozens of other adjectives. i liked this vignette about his dog:
"i witnessed marlon and tim sharing many secrets during tim's lifetime. marlon would whisper in tim's ear, and i'd watch tim raise one eyebrow, as he'd hold his giant mastiff head very still and listen. only his eyebrow would indicate the import of some of their secrets."
peardon and brando's friendship started with a 4 1/2 hour phone call that went until 3 a.m., after which he tried to persuade her to go to the beach to watch the sun rise. the book ends with his memorial service, sensitively described.
