In ancient Britain, the natives followed a religion based on the Goddess of the Moon. When the ancient Druids came with the Celts to the British Isles, they brought with them solar worship of a Sun God. Rather than force their beliefs onto the people, they combined the two, becoming the Priests of this all-encompassing faith. Today, what we base on these ancient traditions is called Celtic Wicca or Witchcraft.
There are many books written by scholars about the Druids. The Lost Books of Merlyn is also written by a scholar of the ancient teachings, but with one difference: Douglas Monroe presents the information so that you can use it today, for personal transformation and growth.
There are three sections or "books" here which are derived from an ancient manuscript called "The Book of Pheryllt." He uses the ancient texts to recreate the lore and legends of the ancient Celts. But this is not just a book of stories. Within each story is the wisdom of the Druids.

About the Author
Douglas Monroe has been involved in practical Earth magick since his first apprenticeship at age 10. As a boy , he studied classical Magic under the guidance of Israel Regardie, and has studied and taught in the United States, in Britain, and in Argentina. He is founder of the New Forest Centre for Magickal Studies and has made many excursions to Celtic Britain to collect original materials on Druidism and Arthurian Lore. His Method of teaching - here seemingly presented as tales of magic and adventure - has many precedents in the Wisdom Teachings of the East and West, but most truly in the Druidic Tradition that he has followed, and of which he is a foremost exponent.

Not for the Uninitiated

If you are interested in learning 'facts' about Merlin or Druidism, don't look here. This is more of a manual for those practiced in the arts, rather than a book of factual information that helps to solidify a belief in something or to prove another wrong. There are many deep layers to this text and one must be aware of the occult teachings (occult just means 'hidden') to comprehend its relevance. Or it may just open the mind of the one unknowingly seeking self-initiation into the mysteries. But beware, this path is trodden with wrong turns and battles of faith...

A bit disappointing...

So having read his previous book, 21 Lessons of Merlyn I was pleased to see this offered. However after reading it I found it not so pleasing. The narrative was not anywhere near as easy to follow as the first book. The way it jumped around in time I almost thought it had been written by Quentin Tarantino. As for the practical infomation...that was a bit easier to follow. I like the formula of using narative then explaining the practical aspects, and it worked very well in 21 lessons. I just think that the narrative portion missed the mark in this on. I still intend to get the third in the series, The Deep Teachings of Merlyn, at some point, but I won't be getting my hopes of it being as cohesive narratively as the first book up too high for that one.

Marginally Better Sequel

The follow-up companion to "The 21 Lessons of Merlyn", this book is a sincere attempt by the author to put down his personal philosophy, spiritual system and magical work. Using questionable sources, the author comes to conclusions that are highly controversial and difficult to substantiate. Much like its prequel, I recommend this book only as a work of fiction or as a way of separating the truth from the nonsense.
